Alcohol ads on YouTube: personalization from October 30

Publication date: 04.09.2026

On October 30, 2026 Google switches on personalized targeting for alcohol advertising on YouTube. Until that date spirits, wine and beer brands could only buy non-personalized impressions there — now they get the same audience tools as everyone else.

The update covers three product groups: alcohol itself, alcohol-related products and alcohol-alternative beverages. It applies in most markets where local law permits personalized alcohol advertising, with Egypt, India, Indonesia and Poland explicitly excluded. Search Engine Land reported the policy change, noting that final availability still depends on country rules and Google's country-level policies.

The existing safeguards stay in place:

  • age restrictions on delivery still apply;
  • targeting based on alcohol-related health information remains prohibited;
  • personalized ads are not served to minors;
  • alcohol keeps its sensitive-category status with a separate set of limits;
  • viewers can reduce the frequency of such ads in My Ad Center.

For the market this signals that YouTube is maturing into a performance channel even in heavily regulated verticals. Personalization changes the economics of buying: instead of broad reach a brand gets remarketing, custom audiences and interest segments — a chance to count actions, not just views. It is also a reason to revisit the media split, because budget that went into reach formats purely for lack of options can now work on bringing an audience back.

What to get done before October 30:

  • confirm with legal that personalized alcohol delivery is allowed in your markets — Google's policy does not override local law;
  • build audiences in advance: customer lists, site visitors, channel viewers and look-alikes on top of them;
  • review creatives against age and local requirements so you do not collect disapprovals on day one;
  • ring-fence a test budget for the first weeks, while there is no real CPA data yet;
  • set up conversion measurement before launch rather than after, or the first month runs blind.
