Who is actually affected by hotel booking in AI Mode

Publication date: 28.08.2026

Google holds the till in this new flow, but the hotel stays the seller. AI Mode can now close a booking: the user describes the trip, picks an option, taps «Continue on Google», confirms the room type and cancellation terms and pays through Google Pay. The merchant of record remains the hotel or the platform — they own the transaction, the guest relationship and all of the support. Google only handles the checkout.

Ten partners are on board at launch, rolling out over the coming weeks: Booking.com, Expedia, Hotels.com, Priceline, Trip.com, Choice Hotels, Hilton, IHG, Marriott and Wyndham. For now it is the US only, in English only. Alongside it, flight price tracking with email alerts went live across 180+ countries and territories, drawing on 300+ airline and travel site partners. Award pricing opened separately — Alaska, Hawaiian, American Airlines, Choice, Hilton and Wyndham, with Accor, Flying Blue, Hyatt, LATAM and Lufthansa Group to follow. PPC Land breaks down the launch details.

Who this hits, and how differently:

  • hotel chains — direct bookings no longer compete with OTAs but with an interface where the chain and the aggregator sit in the same list;
  • OTAs and metasearch — part of the funnel moves one level up, to where the decision is made before the click;
  • PPC teams in travel — the thing to optimise is no longer the click but placement in the shortlist, feed quality and rates;
  • the European market — no timeline: in July the European Commission fined Google €890 million over self-preferencing its own hotel units, with a compliance deadline at the end of September;
  • businesses in Ukraine — no direct access yet, but the shape of the answer a booking is assembled from is already visible.

The common denominator across all of these is the same: visibility in travel search is less and less about a position in the results and more about being in the inventory AI Mode assembles its answer from. Your feed, live rates, clear cancellation terms and rating decide whether you make that shortlist. It is worth checking now rather than waiting for a local launch — once the feature reaches your market, fixing the data will be too late.
