Google Adds a News Carousel to AI Overviews

Google has fully rolled out a Top Stories block inside AI Overviews. It's a carousel of fresh coverage on developing topics — new angles, updates and links to articles. A Google spokesperson confirmed the rollout on July 17, 2026.
For now the feature is live in the United States and on mobile only, but Google has already said it plans to expand to more regions. The company first previewed the capability back in May 2026.
- Where it shows: inside AI Overviews for queries about developing, fast-moving topics.
- What's inside: a carousel with prominent article cards and a range of viewpoints.
- Focus on Preferred Sources — the outlets a user can flag in their settings.
- Google's goal — make timely articles more visible and return some clicks to the open web.
According to Search Engine Land, Barry Schwartz spotted the rollout first, and Google later confirmed it.
What this means for SEO. News and content sites get a new entry point right inside the AI block — and landing in it matters more than the classic Top Stories. Focus on publishing speed for hot topics, clean article markup and section authority so the algorithm treats you as a trusted source. Push to become a Preferred Source too: tell your audience how to add your brand to Google's preferred sources. Watch impressions for news queries in Search Console — expansion to more countries is only a matter of time.
