ChatGPT Answers Local Queries With Yelp Data

Publication date: 24.07.2026

ChatGPT has finally learned to handle local questions like a grown-up. OpenAI and Yelp signed a deal under which reviews, ratings, photos and business listings from Yelp feed into the assistant's answers in real time.

Questions like "where's a good place to eat nearby" or "is this a reliable auto shop" used to be a weak spot for the chatbot — it answered in generalities. Now there's a live review database behind the answer. On top of that, Yelp's Request a Quote feature lets a user ask a service provider for an estimate straight from the ChatGPT conversation, shortening the path from question to lead to a single window.

  • Yelp supplies reviews, ratings, photos and business info in real time;
  • Yelp branding and links stay next to the content, but OpenAI controls how it's presented;
  • there's no exclusivity: Yelp can license the same data to other AI companies too.

Financial terms weren't disclosed. Yelp CEO Jeremy Stoppelman says the company sees value in distributing its content beyond its own platforms when it benefits consumers. As Search Engine Land reports, the deal continues Yelp's line of similar partnerships with Yahoo and Apple Maps.

What it means. Local SEO no longer ends at Google. Presence in review aggregators — Yelp, Google Business, industry directories — starts shaping how AI assistants see a business too. Trust in the format is still fragile: per Morning Consult, only 15% of Americans trust AI search "a lot." That makes a clean reputation and fresh reviews all the more valuable — they now work on two fronts at once: classic search results and ChatGPT answers.
