Meta launches AI agents that sell to customers right in chat apps

Publication date: 17.07.2026

Meta is launching Business Agents — autonomous AI agents for businesses that work right in chats: WhatsApp, Messenger and Instagram Direct. These aren't simple bots: the agents understand context, hold multi-turn conversations and keep the brand voice. This comes from Search Engine Land.

What the agents can do:

  • answer support tickets and qualify leads;
  • check real-time inventory via API;
  • guide a user all the way to checkout — all in one WhatsApp thread;
  • show the catalog and complete a purchase without visiting the site.

Businesses can upload their own data (pricing, inventory), set tone and hours, and keep human oversight. In other words, the messenger becomes a full sales and service channel.

A new high-intent channel is emerging — per the author, optimizing for Meta Business Agents should sit alongside SEO and PPC as a priority. How much of that deal-closing shifts from websites into chat threads is something the first case studies will show.
