ChatGPT ads convert at 0.21% against 3.71% for Google Ads in early tests

Publication date: 11.08.2026

0.21% against 3.71% — that is the conversion gap between ChatGPT advertising and Google Ads in the first measured campaigns. Engagement tells a similar story: 17 seconds on site versus 41 in Google. But it is too early to write the format off: ChatGPT Ads bring in an audience that never searched in Google at all. Here is how it works and what it costs.

How the format works

In its logic ChatGPT Ads is closer to Google Search than to social: the ad appears right inside the conversation at the moment of interest, but there are no keywords. Average CPC is $2–5, the minimum daily budget is $25, and the platform advises against bidding below $3 per click. Targeting rests on three levers: geography (down to postcode), uploading your own data (a minimum of 25,000 matched users) and "contextual hints" — a free-form description of topics and queries. Interestingly, keyword-style hints outperformed conversational phrasing on impressions and CTR. The full breakdown is covered by Search Engine Land.

What to consider before launching

  • access is available in the US, Canada, the UK, Australia, Japan, New Zealand and South Korea (as of August 2026);
  • to start you need a legal entity with a Tax ID, a card, a favicon and an account at ads.openai.com;
  • OpenAI provides a pixel and reports on impressions, clicks, CTR, CPC and CPM — always add UTM tags;
  • you cannot see which conversation triggered an impression — you have to trust the algorithm, as in early Performance Max;
  • the landing page must answer the intent from the conversation, not describe the brand in general: the user arrives with a specific question.

One practical detail visible from day one: the format's audience is still far smaller than search, so the daily budget often goes unspent. Drawing conclusions from the first three days is pointless — there simply will not be enough data.

Can you launch from Ukraine

No: Ukraine is not on the list of available markets, and a VPN will not get around it — you need a legal entity with a tax number and payment details from an eligible country. The format is relevant for those working external markets through a company registered there.

For anyone staying on the Ukrainian market the more useful part of the story is different: audiences already ask their questions in a conversation rather than a search box. That affects not the ad budget but how your pages are written — whether a model can extract an answer from them and name the brand at all.

How to measure the result

The format's main problem is attribution. The query is invisible, platform reports end at the click, so everything that happens next is visible only on your side. The minimum setup: a separate UTM tag per campaign, a goal in web analytics, and comparing cost per lead rather than CPC. How to build those reports is described in the guide on Google Analytics 4 setup.

The conclusion is simple: go in with a test budget and clear UTM attribution, not with hopes of repeating Google's numbers. The format captures demand where search does not see it yet — and that is its real value.
